Country Journals: Italy & Vatican City

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

As I said in a previous blog post, I ended 2023 and started 2024 in Italy–ending and beginning the year in a new destination. I decided to make it a priority to travel more often, whether it is traveling with family, friends, or solo.

When it comes to European travel, few destinations are as beloved as Italy and the Vatican City. Whether you're admiring the works of art in the Vatican Museums, exploring the historic city of Rome, or sampling exquisite Italian cuisine, this country is sure to leave an indelible impression on you. It's no wonder that so many of my fondest travel memories are associated with this beautiful country and its rich history and culture.

In this new series, "Country Journals," I want to break down these destinations into the three groups I often base my travel writings on: Travel. Eat. Relax.

Travel:

Since the year began, January 2024 started in Italy–with other travel destinations in Italy, including Prati, Rome, and Vatican City.

Prati

It is a charming neighborhood located in Rome, Italy. Situated near the Vatican City, Prati offers a unique blend of history, culture, and modernity. This area is known for its elegant streets lined with boutique shops, cozy cafes, and traditional trattorias serving delicious Italian cuisine.

Rome

The capital city of Italy is a mesmerizing destination filled with famous ancient sites, stunning architecture, and vibrant street life. Rome is a treasure trove of art, history, and culture, from the iconic Colosseum to the majestic Vatican City.

Vatican City

An independent city-state surrounded by Rome, it is the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church. Home to St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums, this tiny city is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, history buffs, and religious pilgrims alike.

Eat:

Italian Food

Italian cuisine is renowned worldwide for its rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and regional diversity. From comforting pasta dishes like spaghetti carbonara and lasagna to flavorful risottos and hearty pizzas, Italian food offers a wide array of options to tantalize the taste buds. Olive oil, tomatoes, garlic, and herbs like basil and oregano are staples in Italian cooking, adding depth and complexity to dishes. Indulge in classic dishes like bruschetta, tiramisu, and gelato for a true taste of Italy's culinary heritage.

Italian Cocktails

Italian cocktails are known for their delicious flavors and unique ingredients. Here are a few staple Italian cocktails that showcase the country's rich and diverse drinking culture:

  • Cappuccino: A classic Italian coffee-based cocktail made with espresso, steamed milk, and a layer of frothy milk foam.

  • Aperol Spritz: A refreshing and bubbly cocktail made with Aperol, Prosecco, and a splash of soda water, often garnished with an orange slice. This light and bubbly concoction is the perfect choice for a sunny afternoon or a leisurely evening on the piazza. Its striking orange hue and citrusy notes evoke the spirit of summer in Italy.

  • Negroni: One iconic classic Italian cocktail, a perfect balance of gin, vermouth, and Campari, garnished with an orange twist. This bittersweet aperitif has become a global favorite and embodies the essence of Italian cocktail culture.

  • Bellin: A luxurious cocktail originating from Venice, made with Prosecco and peach puree. This elegant and fruity drink is a delightful treat for special occasions or celebrations. Its delicate flavor and effervescent bubbles make it a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts worldwide.

  • Martini: The classic cocktail, although not originally Italian, has been embraced and perfected by Italian mixologists. Made with gin and dry vermouth, garnished with an olive or a twist of lemon, the Italian Martini is a timeless and sophisticated choice for those who appreciate a well-crafted cocktail.

Overall, cocktails represent a blend of art, science, and creativity, offering a sensory journey that engages the palate, the eyes, and even the sense of smell. Italian cocktails are known for their elegance and sophistication, reflecting the country's passion for quality ingredients and craftsmanship. These staple Italian cocktails are just a glimpse into the diverse and vibrant world of Italian mixology, where tradition meets innovation to create unforgettable drinking experiences.

They are a delightful way to elevate any dining or social experience. Whether sipped slowly to savor each flavor note or enjoyed in a lively social setting, cocktails continue to be a beloved and versatile beverage choice for people around the world.

Cheers to the art of Italian cocktail craftsmanship!

Italian Desserts

Indulging in dessert or sweet treats is a decadent way to end a meal on a high note. From luscious cakes and pastries to creamy puddings and fruity sorbets, there is a dessert to satisfy every sweet craving. Treat yourself to a rich chocolate lava cake, delicate macarons, or a traditional crème brûlée for a touch of sweetness that delights the senses. Sweet treats are not just about taste but also about the joy and comfort they bring, making them a beloved part of culinary experiences.

Relax:

Rest & Relaxation:

Finding moments to relax is crucial for our well-being in our busy lives. It's a necessity, not a luxury. Unwinding through meditation, deep breathing exercises, nature walks, or hobbies can benefit our mental and physical health. Relaxing helps release tension, clear the mind, and reduce stress, improving mood, immune system, and cognitive function. Prioritizing relaxation is an investment in long-term health and happiness. Despite today's fast-paced world, making time to relax daily can bring balance, inner peace, and vitality.

Let's pause, breathe, and embrace relaxation.

In Rome, a city steeped in history and culture, we can find countless opportunities to embrace relaxation. Take a stroll through the streets, marvel at the architectural wonders of the Colosseum and the Pantheon, simply sit in a quaint cafe and watch the world go by, or savor a delicious Italian meal at a cozy trattoria.

Rome offers a unique blend of serenity and excitement. For a more rejuvenating experience, consider treating yourself to a spa day at one of Rome's luxurious wellness centers. Pamper yourself with a soothing massage, unwind in a steam room, or take a dip in a refreshing pool to recharge both your body and mind. You can book a spa day at QC Terme Roma or take a stroll along the Tiber River.

One of the best ways to rest in Rome is to visit Villa Borghese Gardens or the Orange Garden on the Aventine Hill and unwind amidst nature's beauty, indulging in the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Here, you can relax amidst lush greenery and enjoy stunning views of the city.

Adventures:

For adventurous experiences in Rome, consider exploring the catacombs, taking a Vespa tour around the city, or going on a hot air balloon ride over the Roman countryside. Whether you prefer exploring historical landmarks, immersing yourself in nature, or indulging in relaxation, Rome offers a multitude of opportunities for you to rest and rejuvenate during your visit to this captivating city.

Catacombs are underground burial sites of historical and cultural significance, commonly used in ancient times for interring individuals from various societies and religions. The term is often linked to the elaborate network beneath Rome, where early Christians worshipped in secret and buried martyrs. Many catacombs are now preserved as historical sites open for guided tours, allowing visitors to marvel at architectural wonders and contemplate life and death mysteries. The eerie yet historically rich atmosphere attracts travelers, historians, and archaeologists, inviting them to explore human history and mortality.

Embark on a thrilling Vespa tour around the city to immerse yourself in the vibrant sights and sounds that define its unique character. Feel the wind in your hair as you zip through bustling streets and charming alleyways, discovering hidden gems and local hotspots off the beaten path. From iconic landmarks to quaint neighborhoods, each turn reveals a new perspective of the city's rich history and modern charm. Engage all your senses as you take in the tantalizing aromas of street food vendors, the colorful murals adorning historic buildings, and the lively chatter of locals going about their day. Let the Vespa tour be your gateway to a deeper connection with the city, offering a truly authentic and unforgettable experience that will leave you with lasting memories to cherish.
