Country Journals: Mexico

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

In February 2024, I spent some quality time with my mom for our annual Mother/Daughter trip.

If you have the opportunity to visit Mexico, I highly recommend it. There is an energy and excitement in this country that is hard to describe. Whether you're looking for adventure, culture, or relaxation, you can find it all in Mexico. My time there will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can't wait to go back again and explore even more of this incredible country. In February, I visited my third city in Mexico (Cabo). Previous cities I have visited often throughout the years were Cancun and Chetumal.

In this series, "Country Journals," I want to break down these destinations into the three groups I often base my travel writings on: Travel. Eat. Relax.

Travel:

From the beaches to the deserts of Mexico.

Los Cabos & La Paz

Los Cabos and La Paz are two prominent tourist destinations in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Los Cabos is located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, it is known for its stunning beaches, luxurious resorts, world-class golf courses, and vibrant nightlife. On the other hand, La Paz, the state capital, is a more tranquil and peaceful destination, famous for its crystal-clear waters, ideal for water activities such as snorkeling, diving, and sport fishing.

Baja California Sur

It is a captivating Mexican state located on the southern half of the Baja California Peninsula. This region is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including pristine beaches, rugged desert terrain, and crystal-clear waters. The state boasts a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide array of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. One of the most famous attractions in Baja California Sur is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, home to a rich biodiversity of marine life, including gray whales, sea lions, and dolphins. The state is also a popular destination for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, surfing, and sport fishing, thanks to its warm climate and abundant marine resources.

The tourist attractions in Baja California Sur offer a rich natural diversity, including deserts, mountains, oases, and the Sea of Cortez, considered one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. Visitors can enjoy whale watching, swim with whale sharks, explore ancient cave paintings, and delight in the delicious local cuisine known for its fresh seafood and traditional Mexican dishes.

Its natural beauty is steeped in history and culture, with charming colonial towns like Todos Santos and Loreto offering a glimpse into the region's past. The local cuisine is a delightful blend of traditional Mexican flavors with a focus on fresh seafood and regional specialties. Overall, Baja California Sur is a hidden gem waiting to be explored, offering a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences for visitors seeking a unique and unforgettable vacation destination.

Eat:

Mexican Cuisine

Mexican cuisine is renowned for its vibrant flavors, rich history, and diverse ingredients. From the spicy kick of chilies to the comforting warmth of corn tortillas, every dish tells a story of tradition and innovation. A true Mexican foodie not only savors the taste of each bite but also appreciates the cultural significance behind the culinary creations.

Exploring the depths of Mexican gastronomy reveals a tapestry of regional specialties, each with its unique twist on flavors and techniques. From the coastal delights of ceviche to the hearty stews of the central highlands, there is a wealth of culinary treasures waiting to be discovered. The influence of indigenous ingredients like avocado, cacao, and nopales adds a layer of authenticity that sets Mexican cuisine apart on the global stage.

Whether indulging in street tacos from a bustling market or savoring a gourmet mole dish in a fine dining establishment, a foodie is always on a quest for new taste sensations and culinary adventures. With a history that spans centuries and a flavor profile that continues to evolve, Mexican cuisine offers a never-ending journey of exploration for those who are passionate about food.

Mexican Cocktails

When visiting Mexico, exploring the local cocktail scene is a must. One of the most iconic Mexican cocktails is the Margarita, a refreshing blend of tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur served in a salt-rimmed glass. It's the perfect drink to enjoy on a sunny day by the beach or while relaxing at a vibrant cantina.

Another popular choice is the Paloma, a cocktail made with tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice, and a pinch of salt. This drink offers a delightful balance of sweet, sour, and salty flavors that make it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

For those who prefer a more classic option, the Mojito is a fantastic choice. While originating in Cuba, the Mojito has gained popularity in Mexico for its refreshing combination of rum, mint, lime juice, sugar, and soda water. It's a great choice for cooling off on a hot day.

When looking for a unique Mexican twist, the Michelada is a must-try. This savory beer cocktail is made with beer, lime juice, assorted sauces, and spices, often served in a salt-rimmed glass. It's a flavorful and refreshing drink that perfectly complements a spicy Mexican meal.

Lastly, the Mezcal Margarita offers a smoky twist on the classic Margarita by using mezcal instead of tequila. Mezcal's distinctive flavor adds depth to the cocktail, making it a favorite for those looking for a more complex and robust drink.

Exploring these cocktails in Mexico is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a way to immerse yourself in the vibrant and diverse drinking culture of the country. So, next time you find yourself in Mexico, be sure to sip on these delicious cocktails and experience the rich flavors of Mexican mixology.

One iconic dessert is the Tres Leches cake, a moist sponge cake soaked in a mixture of three kinds of milk, typically condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream, resulting in a lusciously creamy texture. Another popular choice is churros, fried dough pastries dusted with cinnamon sugar and often served with a side of rich chocolate sauce for dipping. Mexican flan, a silky smooth custard topped with caramel sauce, is a classic dessert loved for its simplicity and decadence. For those craving something fruity, there's the refreshing agua fresca, a chilled beverage made from fresh fruits like watermelon, mango, or pineapple blended with water and a touch of sugar. These desserts not only satisfy the sweet cravings but also offer a glimpse into the diverse and colorful culinary landscape of Mexico.
