Country Journals: Belize

In March 2024 & April 2024, I spent some quality time with my family, and there's no better feeling than being home.

Belize is a country that is rich in culture and heritage. With a diverse population that includes the Maya, Creole, Garifuna, and Mestizos, Belize has a unique blend of customs, traditions, and flavors that are sure to delight. I am proud to share my country's heritage with the world. Explore the culture and beauty of Belize like never before with me, the Belizean Princess.

In this series, "Country Journals," I want to break down these destinations into the three groups I often base my travel writings on Travel. Eat. Relax.

Travel:

From the beaches to the jungles in Belize.

Belize City

Belize City, the largest city in Belize, is a vibrant urban center with a rich history and cultural heritage. It serves as the country's main port and commercial hub, bustling with activity and offering a mix of colonial architecture and modern developments. The city is home to a diverse population and is a melting pot of different ethnicities and cultures.

Belmopan

Belmopan, the capital of Belize, is a peaceful and picturesque city located in the heart of the country. Known for its lush greenery and serene surroundings, Belmopan offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. It serves as the political center of Belize, housing government buildings and diplomatic missions.

Cayo

Cayo, a district in western Belize, is a nature lover's paradise with its stunning landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities. From lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls to ancient Mayan sites and underground caves, Cayo offers a diverse range of attractions for visitors to explore and enjoy.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker, a charming island off the coast of Belize, is a popular destination for travelers seeking a laid-back tropical getaway. With its sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, Caye Caulker is a paradise for snorkeling, diving, and other water activities. The island's relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals make it a perfect destination for those looking to unwind and soak up the sun.

Belizean Cuisine

Popular Belizean Foods:

Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish that has found its way into Belizean cuisine. These savory treats consist of masa dough filled with seasoned meat, wrapped in a banana leaf, and steamed to perfection. Tamales are a popular choice, especially during holidays and special occasions in Belize.

Orange Walk Tacos is a unique variation of the classic taco that has been adapted to suit Belizean tastes. These tacos are typically made with rolled corn tortillas filled with stewed shredded chicken and cooked onions with a cabbage slaw and/or pepper sauce to the side. They are a favorite (breakfast) street food option in Belize.

Rice and beans are a staple dish in Belizean cuisine, often referred to as the country's national dish. This flavorful combination usually features red kidney beans cooked in coconut milk and served alongside seasoned rice. It is commonly paired with a choice of meat, such as stewed chicken or pork, and a side of fried plantains.

Belizean Cocktails

Panty Rippa is a popular Belizean cocktail made with coconut rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine. It is known for its sweet and tropical flavors, making it a refreshing choice for beachgoers and vacationers.

Rum Punch is a classic Caribbean cocktail enjoyed in Belize, made with rum, fruit juices (such as orange juice, pineapple juice, and grenadine), and a splash of lime. It is a fruity and flavorful drink that is perfect for sipping on a hot day.

Belikin Beer is a popular Belizean beer known for its crisp and refreshing taste. It is brewed in Belize by the Belize Brewing Company and comes in different varieties, including Belikin Lager, Belikin Stout, and Belikin Premium. Belikin Beer is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, often enjoyed during social gatherings, beach outings, and celebrations.
